Wayne Rooney believes Sunday's Community Shield meeting with Manchester City is an opportunity for Manchester United to send out a statement of intent.

United claimed the Premier League title last season, while FA Cup winners City finished third in the top flight, nine points behind their rivals.

City have strengthened their squad further this summer as they look to close the gap on United for the campaign ahead, with £38 million addition Sergio Aguero in contention to make his debut this weekend.

"You couldn't get better motivation to start the season with a bang," Rooney told Four Four Two magazine. "I hadn't even thought about it until I turned on the TV and someone was talking about potentially the best Community Shield ever. Playing City is the best way to start."
