Former West Ham striker Benni McCarthy has fired back at Hammers vice-chairman Karren Brady after she said he was "more devoted to filling his belly than filling the net".

McCarthy endured an unhappy spell at Upton Park after signing from Blackburn Rovers for £2.2 million in January 2010, ending scoreless from 14 appearances and leaving with a £1.5m pay-off 15 months later.

The South African, who last week joined Orlando Pirates in his native South Africa, struggled with his fitness throughout his West Ham career, reaching as much as 15 stone at one point.

Asked about Brady's comments, he said to the Johannesburg-based Sunday Times: "It makes me want to throw up. There's the devil with a set of tits. I am conditioned and can last for 90 minutes, but I'll push myself more to get in even better shape."

McCarthy's attack was not confined to Brady, however - he also slammed the treatment that major European clubs give to African players.

"They get them [African players] for peanuts and sell them for big bucks," he said. "And, when it comes to releasing you for the national team, they give you problems. They don't give a rat's ass what happens to you and your country. They say if you want to save your career, sign this statement that says concentrate on your club career."
