Jose Enrique insists his move to Liverpool is motivated by ambition, not money.

The Spanish left-back completed a medical at Liverpool's Melwood training ground on Thursday and is expected to seal his £6m move this week.

Enrique, who is set to join Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson at Anfield, believes the club can challenge for silverware this season. He had previously been quoted as saying he wants to join a club playing Champions League football, but he clarified that it is success that he craves.

"My move is purely dependent on the sporting opportunity, not money," he said in The Sun. "I want to fight for titles and I think it more possible to do that with Liverpool than Newcastle."

Enrique was fined two weeks' wages in January for criticising Newcastle's transfer policy on Twitter following Andy Carroll's £35 million departure, and the Spaniard has now followed the striker to Anfield.

"I prefer not to comment further on that," he said on the disciplinary procedure. "But Newcastle did promise to solve my situation before the season and this has happened."
