Rio Ferdinand will miss six weeks of action after picking up a hamstring injury in Manchester United's 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion on the opening day of the Premier League season.

The England international limped out of the action in the second half, just minutes after his central defensive partner Nemanja Vidic was also taken off due to injury.

Ferdinand was replaced by summer signing Phil Jones, who cost £16 million from Blackburn Rovers, and the youngster is set for a baptism of fire at Old Trafford, if he can keep his place ahead of Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling.

Before the end of September, United will face Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea, three likely rivals for the Premier League crown the Red Devils claimed last season.

Former international skipper Ferdinand will also be absent for England's crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.

Earlier on Sunday, it was revealed that right-back Rafael has been KOd for 10 weeks due to a dislocated shoulder sustained in training.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson told Sky Sports: "We've had a rough time with injuries. Young Rafa has done his shoulder in training in Friday and will be out for 10 weeks, he's probably going to have an operation.

"Rio will be out for six weeks. Vidic will have checks tomorrow, we don't know if it's just a nerve or something, but he could be out for a couple of weeks.''
