Arsenal have failed in their bid to overturn striker Gervinho's three-game ban for slapping Joey Barton, with the FA throwing out their appeal.

The Gunners' new signing, who arrived from Lille this summer, was given his marching orders at St James' Park after he made contact with Barton's face having being accused by the Newcastle midfielder of diving in a bid to win a penalty.

Both clubs were charged for failing to control their players in the melee that followed, although Arsenal appealed against the severity of Gervinho's punishment, citing that Barton went down too easily.

The FA has dismissed their appeal, however, meaning Gervinho's ban is upheld and he will now miss matches against Liverpool, Manchester United and Swansea, although he is available for Tuesday's first-leg Champions League qualifier against Udinese at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal have until 1600 BST on August 18 to respond to their club fine.
