Spurs will be top four without Modric - Van der Vaart

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rafael van der Vaart reckons Spurs can gatecrash the top four even if Luka Modric completes a move to Chelsea this summer.

Modric has been the subject of two unsuccessful bids from the Blues, who are expected to make a third offer, probably in the region of £30 million, before the transfer window slams shut at the end of August.

Spurs have been insistent that Modric will not be leaving since learning of Chelsea's interest, but recent comments from Harry Redknapp suggest that their stance on the Croatia midfielder may be softening.

Boss Redknapp said: "You either sell him, go out and bring three or four players in and have a better team, probably, in all honesty, or you keep him."

"There is a lot of speculation about Luka and we don't know when he is going to leave," Van der Vaart said in the Sun. "I hope he will stay, but we still have plenty of other fantastic players and a team good enough to finish in the top four.

"Manchester City have spent a lot of money this summer, and so have Manchester United. But we are different at Tottenham, and it's not a problem for me."

Spurs are reportedly on the verge of signing former Arsenal midfielder Lassana Diarra, who played under Redknapp at Portsmouth, from Real Madrid.
