New Arsenal captain Robin van Persie claims the Gunners silenced their doubters by showing "loads of mental strength" in the second leg of the Champions League qualifier against Udinese.

Protecting a one-goal lead in Udine, Arsenal fell behind to Antonio di Natale's strike in the first half, before scoring twice in the second period to claim a 3-1 aggregate triumph that books their place in the group stage.

The result was a significant boost for the Gunners - and one that relieved the pressure on boss Arsene Wenger - after a difficult couple of weeks in which they have lost key midfielders Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas.

The gloom has now been lifted around the club ahead of a key Premier League clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, when Arsenal will try to bag their first domestic win of the season.

"It is vital for Arsenal - we did lose Samir and Cesc, which is very hard for us because they are two great players," Van Persie told Sky Sports News. "To have come out with a performance like this, in the second half especially, is good for our team. People questioned our mental strength, but I think we showed loads of that."
