Emiliano Insua has left Liverpool to join Portuguese side Sporting on a five-year deal.

Insua, 22, joined Liverpool in 2007 but has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular and spent last season on loan at Galatasaray.

With the arrival of Jose Enrique from Newcastle, Liverpool have confirmed on their official website that the left-back has been allowed to move on.

Insua, who made 44 appearances for Liverpool, has told Sporting's website that he is excited about the challenge ahead in Portugal.

"I am delighted to start training and playing here," Insua said. "Sporting is one of the big Portuguese clubs and is recognised for having top players.

"The club is always looking to win titles. I will give everything for Sporting."
