Arsene Wenger has moved to ease his defensive problems moving for Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker.

Wenger has come under pressure to bolster his squad before Wednesday's transfer deadline in the wake of his side's 8-2 Premier League loss at Manchester United on Sunday.

The Gunners were linked with the Germany international earlier in the summer, but the Werder captain claimed he did not want a move to England.

However, with the transfer window drawing to a close and Arsenal in desperate need of defensive cover, the Gunners have entered talks with the Bundesliga club, and the centre-half will have a medical in London on Tuesday afternoon.

Fenerbahce left-back Andre Santos is said to be close to joining Arsenal while the capture of South Korea international Park Chu-young from Monaco is purportedly imminent.

The Gunners have been linked with a host of other names ahead of Wednesday's transfer deadline, including Chelsea trio Florent Malouda, Alex and Yossi Benayoun.

They also last week saw a bid rejected for Bolton's Gary Cahill, a pursuit they may well abandon should a deal for Mertesacker be concluded.
