Steve Bruce believes Nicklas Bendtner's determination to prove himself will benefit his new club Sunderland.

Bendtner, 23, joined Sunderland on a season-long loan from Arsenal on transfer deadline day after struggling to secure a regular playing berth at the Gunners, making just 40 Premier League starts in six years.

Bruce worked alongside Bendtner during the Denmark international's loan spell at Birmingham back in the 2006-07 season, and the Black Cats boss is predicting a big campaign from the striker.

He told SAFC TV: "I had the pleasure of working with Nicklas when he was a young boy at Birmingham and I have monitored his career ever since. There's no doubt that he has terrific ability, and we might just have got him at the right time.

"He's got something to prove and a real hunger to show people just how good he is. Maybe he's lost his way a little bit over the last couple of years, but I'm convinced this is the right move for him. Nicklas is a very naturally gifted footballer."
