MP Steve Rotherham has confirmed a date has been set for a debate on the release of the Hillsborough files to take place in the House of Commons.

A recent petition calling for the files into the tragedy that claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans in 1989 to be made public attracted more than 100,000 signatures, including that of current Reds boss Kenny Dalglish.

It was widely expected that a debate would take place and Rotherham, MP for Liverpool Walton, has confirmed it will take place on October 17.

Rotherham wrote on Twitter: "Confirmation: Hillsborough debate agreed - October 17th for half a day in the House of Commons Chamber with a vote on the motion if nec [necessary]."

The government introduced the e-petitions website this summer and any petitions gaining the support of more than 100,000 people can be considered for a full debate, if an MP suggests it to the backbench business committee.
