The Football Association has charged Sunderland defender Phil Bardsley with violent conduct following an incident in his side's 2-1 loss to Chelsea on Saturday.

Bardsley, 26, appeared to stamp on Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata but was not punished by referee Lee Probert. However, having retrospectively reviewed the incident, the FA has now decided to charge Bardsley, who has already been sent off this season in August's 1-0 loss to Newcastle.

A statement on the FA's official website read: "Bardsley was involved in an incident with Chelsea's Juan Mata during Sunderland's 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light on Saturday September 10. Bardsley has until 6pm on Wednesday September 14 to respond to the charge."

Should Bardsley accept the charge then a three-match ban would follow, meaning the Scotland international would miss the games against Stoke, Norwich and West Brom.
