Arsenal serve up another away-day horror show

Under-fire Blackburn Rovers boss Steve Kean boosted his chances of staying at Ewood Park by masterminding a shock 4-3 win over Arsenal, who produced another defensive horror show on the road, coughing up two own goals on Saturday. The win was a timely boost for Rovers, who later witnessed all three promoted sides win their 3pm fixtures.

Several hundred fans held a protest against Kean prior to kick-off, and the edgy atmosphere intensified after 10 minutes when Gervinho gave Arsenal the lead with his first goal for the club following an £11 million summer move from Lille. Gervinho latched onto Alex Song's fine pass in the penalty area before shooting low across the goal, leaving Paul Robinson motionless as, after taking a slight deflection off the lunging Chris Samba, the ball rolled into the corner of the net.

Arsenal threatened to run away with the match in the ensuing 15 minutes, with Gervinho wasting two good chances, but against the run of play Yakubu equalised, catching Wojciech Szczesny by surprise with an inventive first-time finish after being slipped behind the defence by Junior Hoilett.

The momentum shifted towards Blackburn after that goal, with the hosts twice threatening from set-pieces - yet they found themselves behind on 34 minutes, as Aaron Ramsey drove into the area before cutting the ball back for Mikel Arteta to fire into the roof of the net for his first Gunners strike.

Five minutes into the second period Rovers pulled level in farcical circumstances, with Ruben Rochina's looping free-kick bouncing off Alex Song's knee and into the goal after Robin van Persie failed to head the ball away at the near post. And Arsenal were given distressing reminders of their capitulation at Old Trafford when Rovers moved 3-2 ahead before the hour, having piled on the pressure in the preceding minutes. Yakubu, who looked suspiciously offside, tapped in from four yards after connecting with Steven N'Zonzi's driven centre.

Rovers entered dreamland when they found themselves with a two-goal cushion following an own goal from Laurent Koscielny, who sent Martin Olsson's cross into his own goal after Szczesny missed an interception.

Marouane Chamakh gave Arsenal hope in the 85th minute, sending a laser-guided header past Robinson after leaping to reach Van Persie's cross. The Gunners had two fine chances to score in injury time: first Per Mertesacker nodded over from inside the six-yard box, then Van Persie fired straight at Robinson from similar range - but Rovers held on.

Aston Villa and Newcastle both remain comfortably in the top half of the table following a 1-1 draw at Villa Park. Gabby Agbonlahor's 11th-minute strike put the hosts in front, the striker holding off Fabricio Coloccini before rifling in from close range following Barry Bannan's cross. Leon Best levelled the scores 13 minutes into the second period, fluffing his initial chance by heading straight at Shay Given, then making no mistake when the ball bounced back to him.

Ten-man Bolton sank closer to the relegation zone with a 2-1 home defeat against Norwich. The Canaries wasted a glut of chances before Anthony Pilkington prodded home from point-blank range on 37 minutes, converting after a scramble in the penalty area. And energised by that goal, Norwich made it two five minutes later through Bradley Johnson, who was unmarked when he headed in. Bolton's plight worsened seconds before the break when Ivan Klasnic was dismissed for going head-to-head with Marc Tierney - but the hosts were given hope, which ultimately proved futile, when Martin Petrov netted from the spot on the hour.

Wigan suffered their second defeat of the season as Apostolos Vellios and Royston Drenthe struck late to earn Everton a 3-1 win at Goodison Park. Following an opening half hour of Toffees dominance, Wigan took the lead against the run of play through Franco di Santo, whose long-range shot deflected in off Tony Hibbert. But the visitors' advantage lasted only a minute before Phil Jagielka tapped in from close range after Tim Cahill's header hit a post. Wigan looked to have quelled the home threat until Vellios' 88th-minute header from Hibbert's cross, and Drenthe's injury-time strike.

QPR's August spending looked a shrewd investment as they stormed to an impressive 3-0 win over Wolves at Molineux. Hoops captain Joey Barton fired his new side into the lead after seven minutes, diverting Shaun Wright-Phillips' mishit shot into the net, and the visitors notched again soon afterwards thanks to a 20-yard volley from Alejandro Faurlin. DJ Campbell rounded off the scoring in the dying minutes.

Swansea recorded their first league win of the season thanks to a 3-0 triumph over West Brom at the Liberty Stadium. The hosts' maiden Premier League goal came courtesy of a penalty from Scott Sinclair, who converted on 14 minutes following Paul Scharner's foul on Joe Allen. Ten minutes later the Swans doubled their tally when Leroy Lita nodded in after Sinclair flicked on a corner - and the points were safe on 49 minutes after Nathan Dyer, having latched onto Lita's flick, fired through Ben Foster's legs.
