Tottenham prepared to double Modric's wages

Tottenham have opened talks with Luka Modric over a new contract and are prepared to double the midfielder's salary after fending off the advances of Chelsea over the summer.

Spurs turned down repeated attempts from their London rivals to sign the Croatia international, and even though Modric has just under five years left on his current deal, chairman Daniel Levy has accepted manager Harry Redknapp's calls for an improved deal for their star player.

Modric is currently paid around £46,000 a week by Tottenham, a figure Chelsea were willing to treble. And Levy has accepted Redknapp's argument that Modric's value should be reflected in his salary.

"If he's worth £40 million, then life tells you that you have to be paid accordingly," Redknapp said earlier this month. "You can't say he is worth that much then pay him the wages of someone worth £5 million. That doesn't ring true, does it? You have to look after the boy and I am sure we will do that. Hopefully, his future is here."

Modric accused Levy of breaking a gentleman's agreement when they ignored his pleas to be allowed to leave in the summer, but he looks set to become Spurs' highest paid player, with reports suggesting Levy has offered a £95,000-a-week deal plus bonuses.
