Everton have released a statement on their official website confirming they have lodged an appeal against Jack Rodwell's red card picked up in Saturday's defeat to Liverpool.

The young midfielder was sent off midway through the first half for a tackle on Luis Suarez, which earned a straight red card from referee Martin Atkinson. Rodwell appeared to win the ball cleanly, although his body momentum did take him into Suarez's shins.

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said: "Following a review of the video evidence we believe the decision to be wrong and we will be contacting the FA requesting that the red card is rescinded."

Rodwell stands to serve a three-match ban if Everton are unsuccessful. That would keep him out of league and cup games against Chelsea and a trip to Fulham later this month.

David Moyes commented on Rodwell's red card in his post-match interview, stating: "I would have been disappointed if it had been a free-kick and if he had given a yellow card you would have said, 'What is that for?'. It would have been hard playing Liverpool 11 v 11 - it was a really tough game for us and it became tougher."
