Eden Hazard's agent has claimed Arsenal failed with an attempt to sign the Lille playmaker in the summer.

Hazard, 20, was strongly linked with a big-money move away from Ligue 1 champions Lille in the previous transfer window, but a move failed to materialise as the club opted to retain his services.

Arsenal were among the sides said to be keen on the Belgium international, and the player's representative, John Bico, has suggested the Gunners made an approach to secure his signature.

Bico said in the Sun: "Arsene Wenger wanted Hazard, but Lille said no to the sale last summer. Real Madrid have been watching too."

Hazard, whose current Lille contract runs until 2015, is highly-rated, having been named Ligue 1 Player of the Year in 2011 after winning the Young Player of the Year in 2009 and 2010.
