Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam has hit back at suggestions he went down too easily under a challenge from Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand at the weekend, insisting he is "not that type of player".

Adam, 25, drew a foul from Ferdinand in the second half of Saturday's meeting with United at Anfield that led to the game's opening goal as Steven Gerrard netted the resulting free-kick.

It has been claimed that the Scotland international was guilty of simulation to win the free-kick, but Adam has stressed there was contact with his opponent Ferdinand, while stating he would not have passed up what could have been a goalscoring opportunity.

"Everyone has an opinion and I felt a touch," Adam said. "If I hadn't gone down I would have been clear through on goal so there must have been contact. That's the way I look at it.

"I felt contact when I went past Rio and that's the way it goes. I'm not that type of player. I'm not just going to go down easily. It was a foul and that is why the referee gave it and the goal was just different class. That is why Stevie is one of the best players in the world."
