Roberto Mancini still confident of winning group

Roberto Mancini wants to open talks over a new deal at Manchester City as he targets a long stay with the Premier League table-toppers.

Mancini has led City to their best start to a season since 1897 - winning seven of their first eight league games - having lifted the FA Cup and sealed Champions League qualification in the last campaign.

His contract is set to expire in the summer of 2013 and, despite not hearing anything from the club about fresh terms, he is unconcerned about his future. "I would like to stay here for many years in the future but it is not important, my contract," Mancini said.

"After this year I have one more year and I don't have a problem with this. I haven't talked to the club but at the moment it is not important."

City face a crucial Champions League tie at home to Villarreal on Tuesday as they bid to put right a slow start to their inaugural campaign. Mancini's men opened with a draw against Napoli, then fell to defeat against Bayern Munich in a match overshadowed by Carlos Tevez's alleged refusal to come off the bench.

But despite the striker's future casting a cloud over the club at present following his return from suspension, Mancini remains upbeat. "My feeling here is good. I would like to stay here but in football every week it can change," he said. "If you lose two or three games, that can change all - but we are working well."
