Ferguson unlikely to appeal Vidic red card

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he may not appeal the red card picked up by Nemanja Vidic in Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati on Tuesday.

United earned their first three points of the 2011-12 Champions League campaign thanks to two goals from Wayne Rooney. The England forward converted two penalties, both of which he earned.

However, United's task was made difficult by the second-half dismissal of Vidic, who was shown a straight red card for a reckless lunge. The tackle was high and undoubtedly deserving of a yellow card, but a red looked harsh.

Ferguson clearly had issues with the referee's decision, but he also said he understood why red was brandished. Asked if he would look to appeal, the United boss replied on Sky Sports: "I wouldn't think so, I don't think you win these things.

"He raised his foot and in the context of a lot of referees' interpretation, particularly in Europe, I can see why, but it was very harsh I think."

United struggled throughout their trip to the Champions League minnows, but Ferguson refused to criticise his players. Instead, he preferred to focus on an improved second half performance.

"I think in a lot of these away games you have to work to get victories, it's not easy and they made it very difficult for us," Ferguson said. "The possession figures showed we were in control of the game and in the second half we improved a great deal."
