Newcastle United have been dealt a blow with the news striker Shola Ameobi has been ruled out for four to six weeks with a hamstring strain.

The Magpies have made a bright start to the season and extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a 1-0 win over Wigan.

Ameobi bagged a goal in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham earlier in October, but will be out of action until well into December on account of an an injury he picked up against Wigan.

"Unfortunately we lost Shola on Saturday so he's going to be out, we think, for four to six weeks," Magpies boss Alan Pardew told the club's official website. "That's a blow to us.

"He felt something after about three minutes of coming on. He'll be a loss to us and I think our fans will see how important he is when he's not there."

Meanwhile, Magpies keeper Steve Harper is on the brink of sealing a loan move to Brighton - having lost his place in the side to Tim Krul.
