Corinthians are confident of agreeing a cut-price deal with Manchester City to sign striker Carlos Tevez.

Tevez is free to resume his City career after being found guilty of refusing to warm-up during the club's defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League. He was fined four weeks' wages as punishment and served a two-week suspension.

He is expected to leave City during the January window - and Corinthians are hopeful of getting their man, having failed to complete a deal before the Brazilian transfer window shut over the summer. Tevez played for Corinthians between 2004 and 2006, before moving to West Ham.

Corinthians president Andres Sánchez said: "Tevez is close to joining Corinthians, though many people do not believe it. Before [in the summer] the offer was €40m, now the figure is €18m."

But City are reluctant to let Tevez go on the cheap, with a spokesman commenting: "I can confirm that, following a phone call between Roberto and the chairman, the club's formal position is that no offer for Carlos will be considered unless it reflects true market value."

Reports on Wednesday suggest that Tevez is considering launching a defamation lawsuit against boss Roberto Mancini following the Italian's comments after the Bayern Munich game.
