The FA has at least a week longer to ponder whether or not to appeal Wayne Rooney's three-match suspension, after UEFA delayed providing the written reasons for the ban.

Upon receipt of the document, the FA will hold discussions with Rooney and England manager Fabio Capello ahead of an appeal decision.

An FA statement said: "The FA has today been advised by UEFA that it may not be provided with the written reasons regarding Wayne Rooney's three-match suspension for another week at a minimum."

Rooney was sent off in the 2-2 draw with Montenegro - which guaranteed England's place at Euro 2012 - for kicking out at Miodrag Dzudovic following a battle for possession.

He will miss the entire group stage of Euro 2012, but reports suggest Capello is willing to take a chance and include him in the squad for the tournament in Poland and Ukraine. However, Rooney will not be considered for selection in any of the pre-tournament friendlies, as Capello weighs up his other options.
