Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has revealed captain Michael Dawson is still no nearer a return to action and could face surgery.

Dawson, 27, was handed the team captaincy due to Ledley King's own ongoing injury problems but is now struggling to recover from an Achilles problem himself.

The centre-back has not played since the 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Manchester City at the end of August and was expected to be fit to face Queens Park Rangers this weekend. But after returning to training earlier this month he was forced to abort his comeback due to discomfort in his Achilles.

Dawson's career has blossomed over the last couple of seasons, from being a squad player at White Hart Lane to become a first-team regular and part of Fabio Capello's England squad. But he also missed three months of last season after a knee operation.

"Michael is going for a scan on Wednesday on his Achilles and at the moment he's not feeling happy with it. It could be a long-term problem for him,'' Redknapp revealed. "Michael started to run but didn't feel good. He felt the same pain, had another scan and now has to go to specialist on Wednesday again to see why.

"Until he sees the specialist we don't know if they want to operate on him, which we don't want. An operation would be a long job, we're hoping there is nothing there and it's part of what he'll feel from scar tissue or something. The last resort is an operation.''

William Gallas could be fit to play some part in Sunday's home match against QPR. Redknapp said: "I'm hoping William Gallas should be back now. He's had a calf strain in both legs but should be over that. He's trained this week and we hope he's on his way back.''
