Steven Gerrard has been ruled out of Liverpool's clash with Swansea at the weekend and will not be considered for England's upcoming friendlies on account of injury.

Gerrard made his long-awaited return from a groin problem in Octboer, following six months out, and looked somewhere near his best form against Manchester United.

He was a surprise absentee from Liverpool's win over West Brom and alarm bells rang out when he has pictured leaving hospital with heavy strapping on his leg.

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish revealed Gerrard had picked up an infection and the club have confirmed it will sideline him for a couple of weeks at least.

"Steven Gerrard has now undergone treatment to clear out all infection from his right ankle, which has been placed in a protective plaster cast," read a statement on the club's official website.

"The player will not be available for this weekend's game against Swansea City or for the upcoming England friendlies against Spain and Sweden.

"Steven will now continue his rehabilitation programme under the guidance of the Club's medical staff."
