Michael Owen is facing the prospect of another long stint on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury in Manchester United's 2-0 victory over Otelul Galati on Wednesday night.

Owen, 31, was handed a rare start by Sir Alex Ferguson for the Champions League fixture, but broke down in the lead up to Antonio Valencia's opening goal. The striker's latest injury blow came just 10 minutes into the match and Ferguson later revealed his sympathy for the former England international.

"It's a blow for the lad," Ferguson said. "He's done a thigh muscle and it's a complete freak. I feel for him. It's difficult to say how long-term it is."

Owen was understandably disappointed following the match, saying on Twitter: "Gutted about my injury. Felt my left quad as I reached out to try and score prior to Valencia's goal. Was really looking forward to playing.

"Just hope it's not too serious and I'm back in action soon. Won't get too down. Lads got an important win to put us top of our group."

The win places United at the top of Group C, ahead of Benfica who travel to Old Trafford later this month.
