Tottenham have confirmed they will not know an accurate return date for Michael Dawson until December after the defender underwent surgery on Tuesday.

Dawson's start to the season was curtailed by an Achilles tendon injury, which has kept him sidelined since Spurs' 5-1 defeat to Manchester City. The England man had initially expected to avoid surgery, but a return to the squad was aborted when Dawson continued to feel pain.

As a result, Spurs sent the centre-back for an operation this week, and now he will begin a period of rehabilitation. It is unlikely he will return to first-team action before the end of the year.

Tottenham confirmed on their official website: "Medical staff are pleased with his progress and he will be reviewed by the surgeon in early December, at which time a date for a return to full training will be determined."

Spurs will continue to operate with Younes Kaboul, Ledley King, Sebastien Bassong and William Gallas as central defensive options. In Dawson's absence, Harry Redknapp's men have taken 22 of a possible 24 points in eight Premier League fixtures.
