Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has called on his team-mates to "unite" and not give up hope of reaching the knockout stage of the Champions League.

City's hopes of reaching the last 16 of Europe's premier club competition were dealt a blow on Tuesday night after they slipped to a 2-1 loss in Napoli, leaving their fate out of their hands.

Roberto Mancini's men must now defeat Bayern Munich - who have already qualified - in their final Group A fixture and hope that Napoli stutter at winless Villarreal.

De Jong said on the club's official website: "Napoli played well and took their chances well whereas we didn't take all of ours and that was the difference, I think.

"We had a lot of the play, but we didn't use the possession as well as we needed to.

"Now we need to unite as a team and get our focus back because we have one more group game left and while our fate is no longer in our own hands, there is still hope as long as we beat Bayern Munich."
