Manchester City have been warned that they will have to pay a world-record £88 million if they wish to sign FC Porto striker Hulk in the January transfer window.

Hulk, 25, bagged 36 goals last season to help his side to win the Europa League, Portuguese League and Portuguese Cup under Andre Villas-Boas.

The Brazilian is viewed as one of the hottest properties on the continent and, although City have splashed over £70 million on Edin Dzeko, Sergio Aguero and Mario Balotelli up front already, with wantaway Carlos Tevez set to leave the club, the Premier League leaders may dip into the transfer market again.

However, if City want to bring Hulk to Manchester, his agent Teodoro Fonseca has revealed it will take an unprecedented sum.

"Five clubs have offered £40 million and Porto didn't accept it," Fonseca said. "Only if someone meets the £88 million buyout clause - if it happened, it couldn't be blocked."

Porto must win their final group game against Zenit St Petersburg to seal progress to the next stage of the Champions League, although Hulk would be cup-tied for the competition should City swoop in the next window.
