AVB demands hostile atmosphere
December 6, 2011
Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has called on the fans to create an intimidating atmosphere at Stamford Bridge against Valencia on Tuesday.
Chelsea must win to guarantee a place in the knockout rounds of the Champions League. A 0-0 draw will only be good enough if Bayer Leverkusen take something from their game against Genk in Belgium.
Villas-Boas knows from his time as part of Jose Mourinho's backroom staff at Chelsea that the fans can make a difference at the Bridge.
He said: "They can have a massive impact. They will have to unite themselves. I have good memories of top European nights at this club, and I know the atmosphere can be raised here, just like we did in the 4-2 against Barcelona. If they do that, we would have the right ambience to take on Valencia with that extra input.''
Chelsea might be without Jose Bosingwa for the match after the full-back missed training on Monday. Alex and Nicolas Anelka have both been omitted from the first-team squad after their transfer requests were accepted.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger maintains his side must not worry about the players they have left behind as they look to finish their Champions League Group F campaign with victory over Olympiakos in Athens.
With qualification already secured for the knockout stages with one match to spare, Wenger elected to bring a mixed squad out to Greece - as the likes of captain Robin van Persie, Aaron Ramsey, Theo Walcott and Alex Song all remained in London.
Despite only two of the starting XI from the weekend's Premier League 4-0 win at Wigan being in a youthful 18-man party which boarded the plane from Luton, Wenger insists Arsenal have not travelled to Greece just to make up the numbers.
"It is not who we left at home - it is who will play who is important. Before you make an early judgement, let's wait to see how our team will do,'' Wenger said. "We have a very strong team. Many of the team have played in the first game against Olympiacos, so give the players who turn up some credit - they will produce a good performance.
"We are unbeaten and want to continue our run, and also to be respectful of everybody else in the group. We have a moral responsibility to play to win tomorrow.''
