Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has rubbished suggestions that he will swoop for Bolton and England defender Gary Cahill during the January transfer window.

With Alex poised to leave the club after having a transfer request accepted, Villas-Boas is expected to be in the market for a centre back - and Cahill has formed a solid partnership with Blues captain John Terry at international level.

But although Cahill is out of contract in the summer and likely to be available for a knockdown price, Villas-Boas will not battle Tottenham for his signature.

He said: "He's a fantastic player because he plays for the English national team, a central defender of high qualities. He had a fantastic year last season for club and country. But he is not a player that we are considering."

Most of Chelsea's summer transfer window was spent trying to lure Luka Modric away from Tottenham, with the Blues reportedly seeing a £40 million offer rejected. Villas-Boas claims the club will not revisit that saga over the winter.

"We have [Michael] Essien returning [from injury] and I think we have left that one for sure," he said.
