Blackburn Rovers defender Michel Salgado claims he has been left out of the matchday squad for Tuesday night's crucial clash with relegation rivals Bolton because the club can't afford to offer him a new contract.

Salgado told Sky Sports News that he is fit and available for selection but has not been selected because he is entitled to a new contract at Ewood Park if he plays a certain number of games this season.

"I want the fans to know all I want to do is help the team and help Blackburn survive in the Premier League, but the owners and manager aren't allowing me to do this," he said. "I'm fit to play but I have been given five days off instead."

Blackburn boss Steve Kean confirmed on Monday that the 36-year-old would not be at the club next season, but Salgado's claims cast fresh doubt on the state of the club's finances.

Blackburn's owners, Venky's, were forced to deny reports the club was on the verge of a financial crisis last week, releasing a statement to insist the club does not have money worries.

The statement, on behalf of finance director Karen Silk, read: "There is no financial crisis, and, there is absolutely no danger to the players' and staff wages.

"Amongst all professional football clubs, finances are regularly assessed and reassessed during the season based on performance, income and costs, and at Blackburn Rovers this is no different.

"Barclays Bank and Blackburn Rovers have enjoyed a long relationship over many years and are currently in constructive dialogue about how the bank, along with the owners, can support the club for many years to come."
