Wigan manager Roberto Martinez has admitted he is interested in strengthening his squad in the January transfer window, although he stopped short of declaring an interest in Manchester United striker Federico Macheda.

Wigan remain in the relegation zone despite two morale-boosting recent draws with Chelsea and Liverpool at the DW Stadium. With safety far from assured in the Premier League, Martinez has assured fans that he is working hard to identify potential targets when the transfer window opens next month.

"At the moment, there are many names thrown in the market, as you can expect," he said. "We are trying to improve our squad. In every window we will do that. That does not mean we will bring players, because sometimes you need to be very careful.

"We are going to bring the right personalities and the right characters to the club.

"But in many ways we will work hard at it and I am sure January is going to be a positive month for us and that is what we are working towards.

"But we never panic. We never bring players just for the sake of it. We will carry on working on the same lines."

Macheda is one name who has been linked with the club - with United believed to be willing to allow him out on loan once more - but Martinez would not get into specifics about any interest.

"It would be a big mistake to talk about any individuals at this point," he added. "Talking about players, I always find it disrespectful when they represent other football clubs.

"There is a long list. You need to understand, in our football club, when we want to bring a player in, there is a lot of work behind it and you need to go down to detail."
