Redknapp aims financial dig at Manchester City

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has taken a thinly-veiled swipe at Chelsea and Manchester City by insisting his club have put themselves in the title race the right way rather than breaking the bank.

When Redknapp took charge in 2008, Spurs were bottom of the Premier League table with two points from eight games - and the former West Ham, Portsmouth and Southampton manager has transformed their fortunes.

Spurs now sit in third place in the table, three points behind leaders Manchester City who they play next weekend, and look certain to qualify for the Champions League for the second time in three seasons.

Redknapp told The Sun: "City are where they are because of Sheikh Mansour and Chelsea thanks to Roman Abramovich. We have not done it that way and it makes me proud. You don't have to go out and spend fortunes to find good players.

"Spurs are not third in the Premier League because someone has walked through the door at White Hart Lane and slapped a bundle of money on my desk. City can pay players £200,000 a week, it's unbelievable. The people running Spurs have invested wisely.

"Some of the players we brought in raised eyebrows, like Younes Kaboul, but he's made excellent progress. Hopefully it is coming together now.''
