Terry and Ferdinand avoid any pleasantries

FA Cup Round-up: Kuyt dumps out United

Hands off
With all the attention on John Terry and Anton Ferdinand before QPR's FA Cup fourth-round clash against Chelsea, the question on everyone's lips was, will Ferdinand shake hands with the England captain? Remember that awkward moment when Wayne Bridge refused to shake Terry's hand? Well, the FA decided to avoid any such controversy and cancelled the pre-match handshakes altogether. Problem not so much solved as avoided entirely.
Rolling back the years
In their grudge match against Manchester United, Liverpool claimed a memorable 2-1 victory at Anfield. They haven't been to Wembley for 16 years, but they could play twice this year as they remained on course for a cup double. The likes of Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman may be well gone, but with Jamie Carragher partnering Steven Gerrard in midfield, spectators could be forgiven for looking at their watches - with Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs pulling the strings for United, it could have been 1999.
Oh De Gea, you're breaking my heart
Manchester United keeper David De Gea was at fault for Liverpool's opener, the Spaniard flapping at Gerrard's corner and was left in no-man's land as Daniel Agger rose above the United defence to nod Liverpool ahead. Anders Lindegaard was spotted warming up on the sidelines, but De Gea, who has only kept one clean sheet in his last seven appearances for United, stayed on the pitch, and was helpless to prevent Dirk Kuyt's 88th-minute winner.
It's better to be lucky than good
Stevenage are into the next round after holding off Notts County, but they can hardly claim too much intent to goal that won them the game. Damion Stewart was the unfortunate victim of the own goal, seeing the ball rebound off him into the net after Luke Freeman's shot hit Magpies goalkeeper Stuart Nelson squarely in the face.
One dream continues, another is dashed for Crawley
Polarising Crawley boss Steve Evans made it clear that what he really wanted was another crack at Manchester United in this competition, ahead of receiving an altogether less romantic draw against Hull City at the KC Stadium. Evans' side pushed United close when they met at Old Trafford in the competition last year, but he will now have to wait at least another year for that rematch he craves - Crawley held up their end of the bargain to move into the fifth round, but United dropped out at the hands of Liverpool.
Matt Tubbs scored the winning goal against Hull, his eighth in his last nine appearances. Who will Evans want now? Liverpool, maybe, or Chelsea or Arsenal? Or with United by the wayside, will the famously hubristic manager now be confident of going all the way to Wembley?
Newcastle's channel curse
For the second year in a row, Newcastle were eliminated from the FA Cup after a tricky away tie against lower league opposition. Last year it was Stevenage, this year it was Brighton - thanks to Mike Williamson's unfortunate own goal. Both games were televised on ESPN, too - perhaps Alan Pardew will politely decline next time that cup broadcast offer comes in...
