Fabio Capello has said his decision to step down as England manager was the result of a "misunderstanding", denying he was relieved to leave the post.

Capello resigned as head coach of the Three Lions on Wednesday, following a meeting with the FA board over their decision to strip John Terry of the captain's armband - a decision the former AC Milan and Real Madrid manager vehemently disagreed with.

In an interview with an Italian television programme, Capello denied suggestions that it was a relief to escape the post he took in December 2007.

""I wasn't escaping, I left because there was a misunderstanding," Capello told Striscia la Notizia.

"It had been going well but sometimes you decide to leave."

Capello also ruled out any chance of returning to manage a club in Italy, saying he now planned to enjoy some time off. Somewhat bizarrely, the Italian was then asked what the Queen made of his decision to resign from the England job.

"The Queen is above it all," he said.
