Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has said he is fast settling into a defensive partnership with David Luiz, and praised his team-mate's display in the win over Cahill's former club Bolton at the weekend.

Having joined Chelsea from the Trotters in January, England international Cahill has been called upon to rapidly adjust to his new team in the midst of captain John Terry's absence through injury.

"Moving mid-season to a new club would be hard anyway, what with having to move house and everything that comes with it, but you just have to get on with it and put in some consistent performances which we did," said Cahill in the wake of Saturday's 3-0 win.

"There's an expectation level from the fans and rightly so, they expect to win games and come and watch good football, and there's nothing wrong with that, it's up to us as players to try and produce that.

"We need to turn the Champions League tie around, the FA Cup is still there for us to strive towards, and obviously we need to get into a league position where we can secure Champions League football. With the quality of players we've got here, hopefully we can go on to fulfil the goals we have for this season."

Cahill reserved special praise for David Luiz, who has been on the receiving end of some cutting criticism and who opened the scoring.

"It was a fantastic goal by David Luiz, he's one of the best centre-backs with the ball at his feet that I've seen, I thought he was fantastic, it was a great goal and fully deserved. It didn't surprise me when he cut inside and bent it in, it was a fantastic finish," Cahill told the club's official website.

"We're obviously working together in training, getting to know each other, especially with different languages and things like that, it takes a bit of time to come together but I was pleased, I thought it worked well."
