The fallout from Chelsea's decision to sack Andre Villas-Boas continued on Monday with news that former player Eddie Newton will return to the club as support to interim boss Roberto Di Matteo.

Chelsea axed Villas-Boas on Sunday, citing poor results as the reason for his dismissal. As a result, Di Matteo is currently charged with the task of leading the Blues through the rest of the season.

Following Villas-Boas out of the exit door will be Jose Mario Rocha, the first-team fitness coach, and Daniel Sousa, who was employed as head opposition scout. Both men were brought in by Villas-Boas. Rocha's position will be filled by Chris Jones, who has been at Chelsea for six years.

Newton will be a popular appointment at Stamford Bridge after he spent the majority of his playing days with the club. Joining as a 13-year-old, he appeared 214 times in the blue jersey.

Di Matteo and Newton will forever be linked by the 1997 FA Cup final, which saw the Italian open the scoring after 43 seconds before Newton wrapped the game up with Chelsea's second goal.

Since hanging up his boots Newton has aided Chelsea's Academy, in addition to roles at MK Dons and West Brom, where he supported Di Matteo on both occasions.
