Tottenham were tested to the full before booking their place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a 3-1 win over Stevenage.

Spurs fell behind early and lost Michael Dawson and Aaron Lennon to injury, but Jermain Defoe drew them level before the break and a penalty from Emmanuel Abebayor and second from Defoe sealed their passage.

Stevenage arrived at White Hart Lane with no fear and they stormed ahead inside four minutes, with Joel Byrom winning and converting a penalty.

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp's mood was not improved by the sight of Dawson being stretchered off with what appeared a serious ankle injury and he was joined on the sidelines later in the first half by Lennon.

But in Defoe they have a goalscorer out of the top drawer and he showed his class when collecting a long ball and lashing a shot into the bottom corner on 26 minutes.

Mark Roberts played a key part for Stevenage, as he passed up two decent chances in the second half and also hauled down Gareth Bale to hand Spurs the penalty that Adebayor slotted home on 55 minutes to put them ahead.

Stevenage did not wilt, Craig Reid had a clever flick well saved by Carlo Cudicini, but Tottenham were always dangerous and after Bale had crashed an effort against the bar from 25 yards, Defoe slammed home his second of the night to book a meeting with Bolton.
