Michael Dawson will not play again this season for Tottenham after scans confirmed he ruptured an ankle ligament during Spurs' 3-1 FA Cup win over Stevenage.

Dawson had to be replaced in the first half of the FA Cup fifth round tie, and the severity of the injury was instantly obvious. Boss Harry Redknapp predicted after the game that his defender would not play again this season, and those fears have proved accurate.

A club statement read: "Scans have determined that Michael Dawson is likely to be absent for a period of 10-12 weeks.

"The central defender was stretchered off in the first half of the FA Cup tie against Stevenage last night, with it now confirmed that he suffered a ruptured ligament in his right ankle."

The news almost certainly rules Dawson out of the Euro 2012 Championship with England this summer. Such is the nature of the injury that he can expect a lengthy recovery time even when he can return to full training, a situation that completes a miserable season for the injury-hit centre-back.
