Kenny Dalglish has lashed out at "disrespectful" judgements about Liverpool's season which are based on the league table alone.

Liverpool lifted the Carling Cup trophy earlier this season and are still going in the FA Cup, with a home quarter-final tie against Stoke City to come on Sunday.

However, despite a spending spree last summer, they have failed to sustain a push for fourth place in the Premier League, and are currently ten points away from that position.

But Dalglish feels the league table does not accurately reflect the calibre of the Reds' performances, which he claims have proved the club is heading in the right direction.

"I think people should take an intelligence check. It's not true that you should only look at the league table," Dalglish said. "Some people will look at that but there's a bigger picture than that.

"There are two other competitions which people say are treated with disrespect. Judging by league positions is also disrespectful.

"For us, all we have said is we want to move the club forward. On the pitch I think it's moved forward. We will just keep going and believe in what we are doing."
