Everton are growing increasingly concerned by a hamstring problem for Jack Rodwell, one which has limited the youngster to just four first-team appearances in 2012.

Rodwell has only played a full 90 minutes for the club once since mid-November, in the Merseyside derby defeat to Liverpool last week, and a resurfacing of the longstanding injury ruled him out of the weekend FA Cup tie with Sunderland.

With the 21-year-old absent again for Wednesday evening's Premier League clash against Arsenal at Goodison Park, Everton assistant manager Steve Round admitted the persistent issue is testing the club's medical staff.

"We think it is something to do with the nervous system. Maybe rest or an injection into a nerve to get the inflammation down will help," he said.

"He is working hard to strengthen his hamstring. We have to keep him going, and we have to make sure that he is doing all the right things."
