Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has quashed suggestions that Paul Scholes has expressed a definite desire to play on next season.

A report in the Sun on Friday suggested Scholes is willing to prolong his career by another year, having returned in January following retirement at the end of last season.

Scholes, 37, has been a huge success since he reclaimed a place on the United playing staff. He has taken part in all but two of United's 15 matches from the moment he came back, starting eight and scoring two goals.

However, there is no guarantee he will follow in the footsteps of Ryan Giggs, 38, by putting himself forward for another season of action at Old Trafford.

Asked if he had urged Scholes to play on, Ferguson said: "We've not approached that subject at all."
