Manchester United striker Michael Owen says he is working hard to return to full fitness, and is preparing to play his part in the club's attempt to retain the Premier League title.

The forward has been out of action since last November with a thigh injury, and whilst he has been training with the first team is still short of being fit enough for selection.

Owen is hopeful that he can soon add a valuable option for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson as the club battles rivals Manchester City for the title.

"I'd love to be fit and available for selection. I've got to focus on getting back fit and sharp, and you never know what's going to happen," Owen told Sky Sports News. "There have been big, big goals scored in the past.

"I remember a couple of seasons back [Federico] Macheda came on against Aston Villa and virtually turned the title race. A lot of people said that was a turning point and we've got some massive games coming up.

"You never know [what can happen] with fitness and form and different things, so if I can get myself back fit and available... That's got to be my aim. I've got to get back just in case I'm required."
