Liverpool striker Andy Carroll has admitted it will be with no little trepidation that he will head back to Newcastle this weekend.

Carroll left Newcastle for Liverpool in January 2011 in a £35m deal and he will make his first appearance at St James' Park since the transfer.

It is not clear exactly what reception Carroll will receive from the Newcastle faithful and he will be nervous when he trots out ahead of the game.

"I don't usually get nervous but this might be a bit different," Carroll said. "All of my family and friends will be there. I'm not sure who they will be supporting."

Newcastle have kicked on since Carroll's departure and are ahead of Liverpool in the table. The striker is delighted to see his home-town club doing so well under manager Alan Pardew.

"It's great to see Newcastle doing so well," Carroll told Liverpool's official magazine. "Obviously I support them, I was brought up there and was lucky enough to play for them. They will always mean something."
