Rangers rejected bid for Naismith

Rangers have revealed that the club rejected an offer for forward Steven Naismith from West Bromwich Albion last week.

The Scotland international, currently sidelined by a cruciate ligament injury, accepted a significant pay cut last month after the club entered administration and has been the subject of transfer speculation since Rangers' financial plight came to light earlier this year.

But administrators Duff and Phelps rejected the bid from the Premier League side, believed to be in the region of £2 million, last week.

The news will be both a boost and a blow to manager Ally McCoist, who admitted he was in the dark as to whether a bid had been placed for Naismith. The Rangers manager is keen to hang on to his top playing personnel, but will be disappointed that he was not kept informed of developments at the club.

"Not to my knowledge," McCoist said when asked if an offer had been tabled for Naismith. "To be fair to the administrators, they keep me up to speed with everything. So I would be very surprised if there has been a £2 million bid in and I don't know about it."

West Brom manager Roy Hodgson was non-committal when asked if he had explored the possibility of bringing in any players from the striken SPL club in March, but admitted he was aware of the situation at Ibrox.

Under the terms of his original deal, Naismith is under contract with Rangers until the summer of 2015.
