Wayne Rooney has trained his sights on surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton's Manchester United goalscoring record.

The England international has netted 175 career goals for United, four adrift of Red Devils greats Dennis Viollet and George Best, and is closing in on Charlton's record of 249.

Passing Viollet and Best would leave him humbled, but he is looking to pass the greatest of them all in the next few years.

"It would be an unbelievable feeling if I could get his record," Rooney told Inside United. "I'm still a long way away but hopefully, one day, I will be able to do it.

"They (Viollet and Best) are obviously club legends and to be in touching distance of their goal tally is something I'm really proud of and hopefully I will overtake them soon."
