John Terry remains a doubt for Chelsea's Premier League clash against Wigan on Saturday after the club confirmed the defender has cracked two ribs.

Terry was replaced after an hour of Chelsea's Champions League quarter-final second-leg win over Benfica on Wednesday, with the Blues skipper struggling to breathe.

Terry was substituted for Gary Cahill in the second half of the encounter and spoke to reporters about the problems he has experienced.

"It's just horrible," he said. "When you get one in the ribs, you can't do anything about it, you can't treat it, you just have let it heal, but I can get through games definitely.

"I thought it was OK but, later in the second half, it just seemed to be getting worse and I was struggling to breathe to be honest. It was difficult. I have never felt anything like that before."

Following a scan, Chelsea have now confirmed that Terry sustained the injury during the 1-0 win in Lisbon last week.

"Scans confirm that John has two cracked ribs sustained in last week's game in Portugal," said a club statement. "We have been able to manage it and will continue to do so. We'll continue to monitor it on a daily basis and will assess him for upcoming games."

Caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo may be inclined to rest Terry for the visit of Wigan, especially with Easter Monday's west London derby at Fulham looming large.
