Papiss Cisse claims it is a "monumental honour" to have inherited the No. 9 shirt at Newcastle that was once worn by club legend Alan Shearer.

Cisse, 26, has taken the Premier League by storm since joining the Magpies from SC Freiburg, scoring ten goals in his first nine appearances.

But despite such an impressive start, Cisse insists he still has a way to go to be on the level of Shearer, who scored 206 goals in 395 matches for Newcastle and briefly managed the club.

"I know the No. 9 shirt is a huge thing in Newcastle - a monumental honour for me," Cisse told the Northern Echo. "Alan Shearer has set the bar very high and I must try to follow the path that he's set. I need to be aware of the past and what the shirt means.

"I'm doing all I can to be worthy. Alan Shearer is the example I have to try and follow. I am not trying to prove I am as good as him - but to live up to what the shirt means. The only way I can do that is by scoring goals and so far it's gone better than I imagined."
