Arsenal are likely to miss out on Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud, according to another rival interested in his signature.

Giroud's exploits in front of goal for Montpellier have made him one of the most talked about players in Europe and he has found his way on to Gunners boss Arsene Wenger's radar.

The striker was primed to leave Montpellier, with Marseille and Arsenal believed to be leading the chase, but his 18 goals have put his team firmly in the title mix.

And provided they secure a spot in the Champions League, he is expected to stay for at least one more season.

"This is a player who wants to play in the Champions League next season and it seems we are not going to get there," Marseille's sporting director Jose Anigo is quoted as saying in the Sun. "That is why I do not believe we have any chance to sign him.

"I don't believe he will leave France this summer because he will want to play with Montpellier in the Champions League."
