Sir Alex Ferguson is not fazed by Manchester United's shock defeat to Wigan, claiming dropped points are part and parcel of tense title battles.

Ferguson's side had been given the title by some when storming eight points clear, one bookmaker had even taken the decision to pay out, but their 1-0 loss to Wigan coupled with Manchester City's win over West Brom opened things up again.

The gap could be down to two points by the time United face Aston Villa on Sunday, but Ferguson is happy with his team's position in the race.

"You do drop points in the latter part of the season," Ferguson said. "We have done it most years. There is the odd year, the Treble year we went through from December without losing and there was another year we went 16 games without losing when Van Nistelrooy scored nine games in a row or something like that.

"But a couple of years back we lost 4-1 to Liverpool at home and won the league by nine points. You do drop points in the run-in, City and ourselves have experienced that, so from the position of a few months ago to where we are today, we have to be absolutely delighted."

Ferguson is convinced his side will respond to their defeat at Wigan in positive fashion.

He said: "The great part of our club is we do recover and we have to recover from Wednesday night. But I have to say how Wigan are at the bottom of the league is hard to understand as they play as good a football as anyone."
